History

The changu narayan temple complex dates back to the 4th century ad, making it one of the oldest hindu temples in nepal. It Is dedicated to lord vishnu, but Shrines To Maa ChinnaMasta, lord shiva, ashta matrika, and krishna are also found within the wider Temple complex.

The Shrine Of Maa ChinnaMasta within the complex is dedicated To The Self-Decapitated Goddess Who Offered Her Own Sacred Blood To Feed Her hungry attendants dakini and varnini.

The Temple complex has survived many threats over the centuries, including a fire in 1702 that destroyed many works, and damage from the gorkha earthquake of 2015. It was rebuilt and restored each time.
