History

The origins of The Temple are steeped in ancient lore, with references found in hindu scriptures and local legends. Believed to have been established around the 10th century ad, it stands as one of the oldest temples in the region.

Though well-established as a centre Of Maa ChinnaMasta’s worship by the 18th century, the site has been a place of devotion among tribals since ancient times. A natural rock covered with An Ashtadhatu (eight-metal alloy) Kavacha Is Venerated As The Living Manifestation Of The Goddess — not a sculpted Idol but A Self-Manifested Sacred Formation.

The name “rajrappa” originates from a legend about a king named raj and his queen rappa, to whom The Goddess Appeared In a dream, Revealed Her Hidden Form beneath the earth, And Promised them a son if they arranged For Her daily worship. The place was thereafter named rajrappa.

The art and architecture of The Temple bears resemblance to that of the famous Maa Kamakhaya Temple of assam. In addition to the main Shrine Of Maa ChinnaMasta, ten temples of various gods and goddesses such as the sun god and lord shiva exist within the complex.
